• WASHING & CARE GUIDE

Due to the hand made nature of our pieces, we are very specific with the care of each one. Below we will list the best way to care for each type of textile and item of clothing.

  • NATURAL DYES

Many of our pieces incorporate natural dyes into the textiles. Which is a sustainable and ancient way of coaxing a color out of a natural material and onto to a fiber, it also an extremly creative art practice. We work with traditional techniques learned through years of collaborating with and learning from, master dyers from around the world, to achieve long lasting beautiful quality colors. Follow this guide to how to best care for your special naturally dyed Mexchic pieces.

DRY CLEANING: Working with a trusted cleaner is generally our recommend way to clean special items.

HAND WASHING: (Not for hand pleated items) With PH Neutral soap, for delicate fibers, in room temperature water, do not let soak.

DRYING: Generally the most important rule, even with synthetic dyes, is to keep your piece away from hanging for a long stretch of time in direct sunlight. Dry the pieces with color in shade.

GENERAL UPKEEP / CARE: Keep lime /lemon juice, Clorox or any type of acid or bleach away from your naturally dyed textiles. Hang them in a clothing dust bag for extra protection from sunlight if your closet is not dark or enclosed.

  • HAND PLEATED SILK

DRY CLEAN ONLY with a trusted cleaner.

KEEP AWAY FROM WATER: (Think… Wicked Witch of the East!) If the pleats get wet, they will fall. These are special pieces hand pleated in our studio and they are not made for every day use. We like to consider them more as wonderful objects of textile art, to admire always and wear sparingly, to hold the longevity of the pleats and form. Silk tends to hold its form quite well if kept away from water, and we like to think that each time it is worn, the piece will adjust itself to its owner’s curves and form.

GENERAL CARE: Hang on a hanger, do not pack down, press tightly or fold. If you plan to travel with it, place the piece on a table and bring the textile together upon itself like closing an accordion, then softly coil up together, place it coiled into a small box or bag, where it cannot be squished by anything else. Then hang it once you’ve arrived to the destination.

  • COTTON / LINEN / RAW DENIM

HAND WASH: Room temperature water, PH Neutral, delicate detergent. No Bleach

MACHINE WASH: On delicate cycle, PH Neutral detergent, no bleach.

LINE DRY: In the shade if the item is cream, black or dyed. In the sun if it is white. The sun keeps the whites brilliant white, but tends to fade colors.

MACHINE DRY: Generally I don’t recommend the use of dyers, they eat up the clothes and your add much to the electric bill :) Ideally (even apartment dwellers) can line dry.

  • WOOL

WOOL RUGS: Dry cleaning once a year should be sufficient. For general upkeep we recommend that you beat it with a broom outside, hung on a chair or a clothing line. Its great for stress relief and also gets the dust out :) Spot clean as needed with room temp water, PH neutral soap. If the rug has natural dyes keep any bleach or acid away from it.
