Podcasts I love
When I lived in the US (a zillion years ago!) I would always sew while listening to NPR, The Diane Rehm show was a special treat and I distinctly remember hearing an interview with chef/author Dianna Kennedy in 2003 which forever changed my universe. I find listing to well done interviews has a calming effect on me, reality based escapism at its best! Here are a few I can’t get through a week without checkin in upon:
The Great Women Artists by Kathy Hessel is an outstanding and provocative look at female artists and their fascinating lives. Kathy’s passion comes through so beautifully in her interviews with other historians, curators and at times the artists themselves. It is beyond inspiring and helps push me along creatively on days I feel rather blahhhh. Literally every episode is a wonder within itself, but my three favorites are the episodes on the Gee’s Bend quit makers, Leonora Carrington, and Ruth Asawa. Looking really forward to listening to the Sheila Hicks interview this weekend while I do some weaving!
Time Sensitive Podcast is a deep dive into the minds of great artists, designers, architects, writers, musicians, business mavens, et al - their perspective on time and how it affects their work and lives. Incredible! One of my favorite episodes is an interview with architect / author Julia Watson on the power of Indigenous technologies and how they can transform our planet (mindblowingly great!)
The Tim Ferriss Show is the podcast I listed to most regualry, he’s been inviting more women on as of late which thrills me to no end as it used to be quite male guest heavy. I’ve gained endless streaming knowledge from his candid in-depth interviews, some can go for as long as 2.5 hours which pass by rather quickly because Ferriss is a truly great intervewiwer and it helps that his guests are really just brilliant, fascinating people. Entering the minds and perspectives of the thought/action/creative leaders of today, is just so exciting, and he is thorough with coving every field, though my favorites tend to lean towards physicists (Janna Levin OMGGG!) and writers (the Elizabeth Gilbert show!). Also there are always incredible book recomendations, some of my all-time favorite non fiction reads have been learned about from his show guests. I love the candid way he gets to the gritty heart of these interviews while keeping it light.
